World AIDS Day: Retailers Join Forces To Raise Awareness

Today is  World AIDS day, a day for people worldwide to unite and fight HIV, support those living with the virus and remember those who have died.  Once again, some fashion retailers are getting involved by releasing special clothing items to support the cause.

Gap, for instance, is  offering a special-edition Anchored in Hope (PRODUCT) RED T men's shirt in charcoal gray for $24.95. Fifty percent of the profits will be donated to the Global Fund.

Nike has come out with a Nike (RED) x World AIDS Day collection that includes special-edition Cheyenne backpacks, peacoat-style Destroyer jackets and a Nike (RED) Zoom Meriwether shoe. The collection will be available at select stores starting Dec. 1 and online.

Traditional healers on the beach

I had the privilege to accompany an Argentinian journalist around Port Elizabeth and the surrounding area for a couple of days showing off this beautiful part of the world I live in.  Walking along Shark Rock Pier at Hobie Beach we noticed a couple of traditional healers performing a ceremony next to the pier (see more pictures on The Firefly Photo Files).  After the ceremony we had a chat with them and the journalist asked if he could get a couple of pictures as it would make a very interesting addition to one of his stories.

City Hall clock

The Port Elizabeth City Hall must be one of the most beautiful historic buildings in the city.  It was originally built between 1858 and 1862 with the clock tower being added in 1883.

Big-bellied chimney frequenter coming to town

Here's a few elegant variations for Father Christmas from former trainee, now health correspondent at Archant Norfolk, Kim Briscoe. Last year Kim referred to Santa as 'the bearded icon' in her round-up of Christmas grottos. This year, with tongues in cheeks, Kim and her colleagues have so far offered:
Big-bellied chimney frequenter
Reindeer-keeping present giver
Ubiquitous red-suited gentleman
and, somewhat unfairly,
Burgeoning, white-bearded fraudster.
They are now suggesting a competition to find the best. I'm not sure I should be encouraging this sort of thing, but killing time on a crowded train from London tonight I mused over:
Hirsute ruby-suited philanthropist
Whiskery seasonal gift distributor
Jocular overweight elf supervisor
Rotund sleigh-riding altruist
Giles Coren would be so proud. All of this nonsense was brought to my attention by Kim's husband, and David Powles, senior content editor at Norwich, who is on the Modern Editor's course I am running at PA in London this week. So while David was ploughing through strategic planning, cost analysis, budgeting, radical revenue streams, entrepreneurial journalism and the future of print, it's nice to know at least his missus was having fun back in the office.
If you have any more elegant variations for Santa, let's have them and I will forward them to the Norwich newsroom.

Fail!!!

Today's post is slightly tongue in cheek.  The association with Port Elizabeth is puerly the fact that these adverts seem to pop up all over the city and get stuck to bus stops, power boxes, freeway pillars and even on the back of stop signs.  The thing that caught my eye was the fact that the middle advert says "Abortions" and "Penis enlargement" followed by "Relationship problems".  I think those three sum up the problem right there.  The middle one leads to the first having to take place which probably causes the latter.  Ps, I took out the good doc's phone number just in case anybody on here got the idea to phone him regarding the middle one (or any of the other two for that matter).

Ressaca electoral

Flipa.

The Black Leather Bomber Jacket

Black leather bomber jackets are making a comeback this season.   Popularized by fighter pilots during World War II, this jacket has just the right bones.  The 2011 version is all-black (ditch the Indiana Jones brown!) with just enough military details to keep the macho mojo going. Wear it in all the ways hip-hop head-turner J. Cole does here—and keep it on inside the club to drop a bomb on the competition.

Rivonia Trialists

I had to visit the Nangoza Jebe Hall (previously Centenary Hall) in New Brighton for a meeting the other day and took a couple of minutes to study and photograph this painting of the Rivonia Trialists in the foyer.  The Rivonia Trial during which ten leaders of the African National Congress were tried for 221 acts of sabotage took place between 1963 and 1964.  The trialists were arrested at Liliesleaf Farm in the Johannesburg suburb of Rivonia and the trial led to Nelson Mandela spending 27 years in prison.  A few of the trialists had links to Port Elizabeth and hence the mural in the Nangoza Jebe Hall.

What no raisins! Yesterday in the Congo!

... an Edenic forest stretches out into the curtain of Congolese haze. Stretched before me is mile upon mile, tree after tree multiply by 10, 100, 10, 000, the number of trees is truly mind boggling, a hundred shades of brown a thousand shades of green, no visible habitation, no roads, no clearings, just forest, just life in all it's fulness. an arboriculturists heaven.
Whilst there is clearing in this photo taken later in the day ...you get the drift!
The days work started in the rain, just as the previous evenings had finished in it. The Pajero seemed very reluctant to wake but after 5 minutes of cajoling it limped out of the Guest House, the start of a two Day MSF Congo charter. First to the office to pick up the trips paperwork, then onto our airfield at Kajjansi, refuel and get the aircraft ready, took on full fuel, 2,200lbs of Jet A-1 (aka paraffin) worth over 7hrs of  flying. Another cold flood of rain drains off the wing root, cascading down my back, you'd think I had learn't where not to stand by now, as it did the same y'day when I was Sudan bound. Freight 300kg of it had been loaded by Richard and Jackson, hard to believe that it took all my effort to shift a small pile of cable, two feet sideways in the back of the aircraft, on reflection it had taken two of them to lift it in! A 12 mile flight to Entebbe to clear paperwork and pick up a satellite dish from Customs, 'just 4 pieces of plastic', easier said than done! Always be warned if the 'just' word is used in Africa it's just down the road - means it's either a 5 minute walk or a 3 hr 4x4 car journey, it's just a small suitcase - means my 6ft tall 20 year something lumberjack son managed to lift it with only a slight hernia,  just a plastic satellite dish - actually it's huge really.

In Bunia (161nm due West of Entebbe) swapped the freight for more passengers and medicines, that the charterers logistic officer had ready for me, amazingly it is not raining and the visibility is reasonable, is this the DRC I ask myself? Soon climbing out past the UN helicopters  and I head out under the cloud layer it soon brightens then all of a sudden one breaks out from under the cloud blanket sun and it is beautiful, as I head just over the hour up to Dungu (NW 157nm).  The trees are truly impressive, herds of snow white unicorns seemingly gallop across the tree tops, cumulus be their names. There are so many trees... After a time they thin out, the forest takes on a strange patchwork quilt like appearance, a maze of what one could almost imagine being grassy 'stagnant ponds'.  It reminds me of a scene at the start of C S Lewis book where the children jump between worlds in the 'Magicians Nephew.'

Once in Dungu a grass strip south of the river, not to be confused with the large UN strip a few miles away north of the river, we get some more freight and passengers are traded, strapped in and we are off. The day is getting warm and raisins make for a great snack, the secret for making these delectable morsels last, is how long can you suck a wrinkled 'grape' before it bursts!

Next stop in Dingila another 150 nm due west. The sun is now very hot through the cockpit window, the roar of the vents is loud, even over the engine noise, as streams of cooling air pour in. Ones eyes strain looking for the tell tale line that marks the airstrip.
Joining over-head the 900m long airfield, this is my first visit, I can see it looks in in excellent shape. There is very little wind and the wheels kick up a small red dust cloud, as they bounce along the 'murram path'. More MSF passengers and freight await but this time I have to unload some of the seats that are strapped together and re-install them on the metal tracks provided. They are designed to be quickly unlocked and removed & equally quickly re-installed, perhaps they were 21years ago when 'Bravo India Lima' was built, but now they are absolute rat bags to get back in quickly - think very uncharitable thoughts towards the designer of what was once a good idea, as I wiggle, shake, push, prod and kick them into place. Perspiration drips down my brow, time is slipping by now as I still have to fly 150nm back to Dungu before heading south to Bunia - it shuts at 1700 hrs local and no one will be allowed to land at 1701 (last daylight landing time is 1711 - NB an hour time zone difference to Uganda). Phew job done...
By the time I bounce gently onto Dungu's murram I have 10 minutes to load & unload the passengers and be off. All 8 pax enter into the reasoning behind my haste and we are rumbling down the runway 9 mins later, sadly had to leave 90kg of freight behind as it would have taken just  to long to tie it down. The days work was always going to be a race against time unless everything went smoothly!

A beautiful late afternoon sun slowly sinks, changing the forests colours from the noon day harshness brightness to a gentler pastle shades of later in the day. The ETA is 10 mins before the airfield shuts, and their are several alternates I could go to if the enroute weather is not as expected, would be interesting arriving at a bush strip with a stack of unexpected passengers but am not expecting a problem - but MAF, has as do the scouts, the motto 'be prepared'. Reach down in my flight bag for another sugar boost, 'What no raisins!' A truly great disapointment but the view sort of makes up for it as we roll along at 2.5nm a minute and supper is perhaps not so long off, certainly breakfast was an age ago.
Climbing out over the river the 208 makes a great shadow
The airfield has a tower and is giving 8km in haze but I spot it 10 miles out!  The wheels gently squeak as we land back on Bunia's tarmac rwy. Over 6hrs of flying today and the day is done. Arrange to meet my pax for a 0900 local departure next morning and we go our seperate ways, now first a shower, then supper and a good nights rest at the Lincoln's.

Miami Beach's Delano Hotel the Jewel of the Beach

The original icon of South Beach as we know it, Delano has a hearty dose of the flash, sass and sophistication that everybody heads to Miami for. From the moment guests saunter up the breezy stairs and into the dramatic, billowing white-draped lobby (the brainchild of acclaimed designer Philippe Starck), the surreal trip begins.

While it’s considered an Art Deco “boutique hotel,” Delano has almost as much to offer as any resort you’d find in Vegas, with enough enticing facilities to keep you on-site the whole trip. There’s the sexy Rose bar (with its highly social pool table), an indoor-outdoor penthouse spa/solarium, and the stunning palm-ringed pool, with its soothing underwater music and its signature: seemingly floating silver table and chairs. Alice in Wonderland–style whimsy is everywhere, including the poolside “orchard” — a landscaped lawn dotted with such curiosities as an antique daybed and oversize chessboard. For sushi, there’s the Blue Sea; for sumptuous seafood, there’s master chef Claude Troigros’s elegant Blue Door Fish; for more casual brasserie fare and late-night dining, there’s Plat Bleu; and for late-night mingling and live music, there’s the Kravitz–designed The Florida Room piano lounge, a hot spot since it arrived on the SoBe scene.

Tim Andreas and Banjo AD revamped the spa and the guestrooms, expanding on Starck’s original vision. Gone is the severe white-on-white-on-white milieu; in its place is an enhanced, updated palette and a new, casual opulence.

Donkeys in pajamas

Did you know?
  • There are three types of zebra.  The most common of the three, the Burchell's zebra (Equus burchellii) is also called the plains zebra and the common zebra
  • The Burchell's zebra can be identifies by its brown "phantom" stripe on the white stripe
  • Each zebra has its own unique pattern of those distinctive stripes, just as humans have their own unique pattern of fingerprints
  • Stripes make a herd of zebras look confusing to a predator, especially when they're moving, and particularly at dawn and dusk.
  •  A zebra's teeth keep growing for its entire life, because constant grazing and chewing wears them down.
  • A baby zebra can stand up just 20 minutes after it's born. It can run when it's an hour old.

  • A zebra's night vision is believed to be as good as an owl's.
  • A herd of zebra are called a ... dazzle

AT&T Drops Bid to Buy T-Mobile

Thursday, AT&T issued a formal statement withdrawing its intent to  merger with T-Mobile. The company had previously agreed acquire T-Mobile for $39 billion. Yesterday, on Thanksgiving Day here in the U.S., AT&T released a statement announcing its intention to withdraw its request from the FCC.

Fight Holiday Bulge With This Fat Burning Vid

Just in time for the Holidays and New Year’s resolutions, our friend Brandon Carter has put together a new  Abs / Fat Burning workout video designed burn off some of the calories you gain at the dinner table and office parties.

Circle patterns

How often do we just wander blindly through life not noticing anything around us?  I wonder how many Port Elizabethans have ever spotted the circular paving patterns next to Hobie Beach.

L'hagueren deixat eixir?

Potser quan tinga una estona m'informaré. Per si de cas.

The power of a single image: 45 stunning photos

I have spent a couple of days this week talking about design with Middle East journalists from the newspaper Al Watan. We have been concentrating on the power of a single image or 'bull picture' on a page. This isn't something that their paper does often. Anyway, in discussion we stumbled across the National Geographic's Photo Competition. We looked at 45 stunning images in the People, Places and Nature categories. Take a look here. If anyone ever doubted the power of a single image, they couldn't fail be to be persuaded by these shots. If you want to enter (the closing date is next Wednesday) or just want to look at more amazing pictures, the details are here.

Baby Bontebok

This time of year one gets to see lots of little baby animals running around the game reserves surrounding Port Elizabeth.  Kragga Kamma Game Park is probably one of the best options to visit if you want to take the family and show the babies to the kids.  I photographed these Bontebok moms with their babies at Kragga Kamma last week and just missed the first zebra born this season by a couple of days.

Populisme pur i dur.

I ciutadà. .

From Fenton to Leveson - the week in clips

My advice to journalists to have "good taste and a dirty mind" so that they can keep innuendo and double-entendres out of the newspaper also, of course, applies to broadcasters. It's a lesson that might have benefited Jane Garvey and author Aileen Ribero admiring the work of chef Giorgio Locatelli on Radio 4's Woman Hour on Tuesday.
This is an edited version, courtesy of Tim Johns, and is made up of three separate clips, but you can catch the whole thing on iPlayer here.
There were a couple of other clips trending on Twitter this week, one which I found funny, the other less so. The rogue dog Fenton (some say Benton) chasing deer in Richmond Park was watched by 750,000 people on Youtube. It was filmed by 13-year-old Jake Goodyear (listen to his Mutley snigger at the end). People with far too much time of their hands have since created a raft of mash-ups. Here's the Jurassic Park version and there are many others too. If you have the time or inclination the Guardian's Media Monkey lists some of them here. Meanwhile the newspapers are still hunting for Fenton's owner.
One of the other big trending subjects of the weekly came, remarkably, out of the grim and sombre Leveson inquiry into phone hacking. Barrister Carine Patry Hoskins became known as the #womanontheleft for smiling at Hugh Grant's cricketing joke on this Sky News clip.
She became an internet sensation, but for what reason exactly? I tend to agree with the New Statesman's Helen Lewis-Hastley on this one.
The most shocking thing that came my way via Twitter this week though was from India's Got Talent. Britain's Got Talent, boring. The X-Factor, a banal karaoke show. But this I would stay in for. The video is not for the faint-hearted.

2013 CADILLAC XTS

It's about time Caddy got around to updating its flagship sedan, and update they did. The 2013 Cadillac XTS ($TBA) replaces both the aging (and hideously ugly) DTS and STS, breathing fresh air into the company's full-size lineup with all-new styling, the company's all-new CUE infotainment system — think multitouch and proximity sensors — and, surely, plenty of other goodies that have yet to be announced. Expect to see it in showrooms early next year.

View from Blue Waters Cafe

One of the best places to go for breakfast along the Port Elizabeth beachfront must be Blue Waters Cafe on the seaward side from the Boardwalk next to Shark Rock Pier.  Last weekend I visited the restaurant with a visitor from out of town and while we were waiting for our food popped out onto their balcony to snap a pic.  It was a cloudy and somewhat wet morning with no sign that summer is fast approaching, but it doesn't mean that the view changes (other for the fact there there is no blue sky).

Converse All Star Coated Sneakers

"Chuck, meet Boots. Boots, meet Chuck." Okay, so that's probably not how these Converse All Star Coated Canvas Sneakers ($70-$80) came to be, but the concept isn't far off. Available in tall and normal varieties, these kicks combine the classic Chuck outline with coated canvas uppers, D-Ring eyelets, leather ankle patches, and rounded boot laces. Just the thing for pairing with jeans and a hoodie on a gloomy winter day.

"The Best in Town"

Although the Damselfly just put the shaver through my hair every now and then I may just consider Ntleki Barber Shop at Njoli Square next time I need a haircut.  Why?  Because they claim to be the best in town.

O no?

No tot anava a estar tan malament.

LA Fitness Acquires 171 Bally Total Fitness Clubs

Health and fitness club members throughout the country could soon notice changes to their fitness clubs as consolidation in the industry continues to take place.   This afternoon, LA Fitness, announced it is acquiring 171 clubs from Bally Total Fitness, for $153 million.

The acquisition involves Bally clubs in 16 states plus the District of Columbia. The deal is expected to be completed on Nov. 30. After completion of the transaction, Bally will continue to operate its remaining 100 clubs.

The states in which the Bally clubs have been acquired are Arizona, California (Southern California), Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon,
Pennsylvania, Washington, the District of Columbia and certain locations in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.
For part of this year, Bally had been in talks with Gold’s Gym International, Irving, TX. Officials from both companies met in early August in Chicago. According to a source, among the topics that were discussed were Bally’s club operations, facilities, real estate and finances. Gold’s was to visit about 40 Bally clubs, according to a source. But talks of a possible Gold's acquisition of Bally cooled later.
The LA Fitness acquisition of Bally marks the second big deal in the industry in the past four days. On Tuesday, Life Time Fitness, Chanhassen, MN, announced it had acquired four clubs operated by Lifestyle Family Fitness, St. Petersburg, FL, in Ohio and Indiana and that it could acquire up to another five in North Carolina.
In August, Equinox, New York, announced it was purchasing four The Sports Club/LA clubs from The Sports Club Co., Los Angeles. That deal went for $130 million, according to a source, and was finalized in October.
